Tern
Art direction for an independent travel quarterly, from the cover to the last page, four issues a year.
The brief
Tern Quarterly is a small magazine about slow travel: ferries, night trains and the towns most guides skip.
After a few years of changing looks, it needed one visual voice that could carry a whole issue and still feel new each season.
What I did
I built the look around the horizon line. Every cover and opening spread is split by one, with a single bird, boat or train in the open half.
I wrote a short photo brief for contributors, set the type for long reads and drew a twelve-column grid that works for short notes and long features alike.
What changed
12
issues, one visual voice
Twelve issues on, the covers read as one series on the shelf, and contributors send photos that fit the page without a reshoot.
